Let me spill the beans on how my greenhouse came to life. It's a story of dirt, dreams, and a dash of DIY magic. Picture this: I was dreaming of a cozy corner where my plants could thrive without any weather drama. So, armed with a bit of determination and a handful of tools, we decided to build my own haven for greenery. Now, every time I step into my homemade greenhouse, it's like stepping into a slice of plant paradise. Let me take you my journey of how my humble greenhouse found its roots and grew into a leafy retreat.
Greenhouse Dream Unfolds
Many moons ago, I kicked off my seedling-growing adventure right on my windowsill, using baby formula containers to nurture tiny herbs. Then, I upgraded my game, shifting to plastic Gerber baby food containers as my green thumb evolved over the years. (By the way, I’m quite the frugal enthusiast – call it cheap if you like!) With two decades of baby-raising under my belt, those containers were like a recycling jackpot.
Fast forward to the day my dining table transformed into a jungle of baby seedlings – that's when I knew it was high time to elevate my game with a greenhouse. Imagine my excitement! My husband surprised me with a stand-up greenhouse, and although it wasn't the massive plant haven I had dreamt of, it was a start. (Check out a similar one here: GREENHOUSE
Honestly, I initially felt a tad disappointed, yearning for a colossal greenhouse with no clear reason why. But my husband, ever the voice of reason, proposed a challenge. If I could successfully grow a season's worth of plants in that mini greenhouse, he'd build me the greenhouse of my dreams. Intrigued, I took on the challenge, ending up with not one but two of those compact greenhouses. They worked like a charm for two seasons, but note to self: always tie them down! I learned that the hard way when the wind played tag with my greenhouses, sending my plant babies on an unexpected journey. Lesson learned, and back to replanting I went.
Winter build
Amidst our bustling schedules, a surprising winter gift awaited me in 2020 – my husband's free weekend and the start of a greenhouse dream come true. Imagine my joy – it felt like Christmas, and indeed, it was pretty close to the festive season. Braving the winter chill and snow, my husband embarked on crafting an 8-foot by 8-foot greenhouse for me, heated solely by a wood stove. The excitement was real, but truth be told, I was a novice when it came to greenhouse gardening. The wood stove, though small, was a trooper, demanding our attention every two hours during the bitter cold.
As February rolled in, signaling the start of my planting adventure, I found myself setting midnight alarms. Picture this – braving the cold, stoking the fire, and checking on my plant babies to ensure they stayed cozy through the night. It was exhausting, but the thrill of showcasing the fruits of my husband's labor kept me going. In that inaugural year, I may have gone a bit overboard – like, seriously overboard. I managed to nurture a whopping 600 plants within the confines of my cozy greenhouse. It felt like I had become a plant deity of sorts. Some found a home in my garden, a few were sold, and towards the end, I was practically begging people to adopt them. After all, tossing away those little green wonders felt like a crime after the effort I had put into growing them.
Growing Smarter Every Year
Every year, my journey with greenhouse gardening unveils fresh lessons, a constant evolution of knowledge that shapes the way I approach this green haven. With each season, I discover nuances about cultivating within the greenhouse, contemplating tweaks for an imagined future greenhouse endeavor. The wisdom gained has transformed my strategy; no more attempting to cram every conceivable plant inside. Now, I meticulously plan, discerning what's essential and what I can afford to skip. It's a dance of prioritization. Understanding the intricacies of pest control, disease management, and honing my skills to regulate the greenhouse's temperature have become crucial. No longer do I find myself sacrificing precious sleep to tend to the heat. As the greenhouse seasons pass, so does my wisdom, making each planting experience not just about growth but also about constant refinement and improvement.
Learning and Growing
I believe that each year brings its own set of challenges, and my hope is to embrace these challenges as opportunities for learning and growth. I look forward to discovering new insights that can guide me in cultivating and managing my greenhouse space more efficiently. My aspiration is that this journey inspires you to take the first step, encouraging you to learn, experiment, and witness the growth of both your plants and knowledge. Recognize that entering the world of gardening doesn't come with a manual, but with each experience, we inch closer to mastering the skills necessary for successful cultivation.
