Elderberry Syrup
Ingredients:
- 1 cup dried elderberries or 2 cups fresh
- 4 cups water
- 2 cinnamon stick
- 2 cloves
- 1 cup honey (or more to taste)
Instructions:
1. Simmer the Elderberries: In a medium-sized saucepan, add the dried elderberries, water, cinnamon stick, and cloves. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour, or until the liquid has reduced by half.
2. Strain the Mixture: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow it to cool slightly. Using a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth, strain the liquid into a bowl or glass jar. Discard the elderberries and spices.
3. Add Honey: Once the liquid has cooled to lukewarm, stir in the honey. You can adjust the amount of honey to taste. Some prefer it sweeter, while others like it less sweet.
4. Store: Pour the elderberry syrup into a clean, airtight glass jar or bottle. Store it in the refrigerator, where it can last for several months.
Usage:
- Take 1-2 tablespoons of elderberry syrup daily for immune support during cold and flu seasons. You can also drizzle it over pancakes or use it as a sweetener in herbal teas.
